            CRISTINA LAZARRAGA, STRENGTH AND DETERMINATION

Despite taking a deserved second place at the 2021 world championships, the big win narrowly eluded her
and this year she´ s going all out. She has great options to achieve her dream.

It wasn’t for lack of preparation or performance; in competitions you also have to reckon with unforeseen events that
can mean losing first place. That’s what happened to Cristina last year. During the European Championship, at the
Polish GP, she had the best race of her life. She competed in the female and male categories at the same time, and
managed to win both in the same race. However, although she was first in the first two heats, in the last and decisive
one she made a mistake by missing one buoy, for which she was disqualified. So she fell out of first place on points,
which is what she was fighting for. In any case, the sensations were unbeatable and it tasted like gold to her.

From the European Championship she went on to play the World Cup in Sardinia. It was the first time in history that a
women’s category had been opened and she had a chance of winning a gold. However, despite taking the pole position,
at the start she had a small collision with a Frenchwoman, and that already determined the course of the race. She
finished second and was proclaimed the worlds runner-up.

Without a doubt, 2021 was very good for Cristina, but her goal is to achieve gold and she´s not going to stop until she
gets it. This year there are more races. With a total of four for the European championship, there are more chances of
victory. Just like in the world championship. This year there will be two races and one of them will be held in Ibiza. For
this she’s very excited, although it also means “a little extra pressure to do it well at home. It’s going to be very exciting.
At home, there will be many Spaniards competing and being surrounded by your people gives you a lot of strength”.

Cristina is moved by her goal. She trains every weekend in Altea and can’t wait for that world championship to arrive in
Ibiza, on May 14 and 15. In the next issue we will see if she has managed to fulfil her dream.
